Young Guv: Couldn't Leave U If I Tried (2022)

A recent disc which came with a copy of a British music magazine alerted us to the power pop charms of Brooklyn-based Young Guv who on this song – which opened his 2022 album Guv III – distills the sound of the Shoes, Searchers, Raspberries and . . .

Well, as we've said previously, power pop is a genre which announces and defines itself in the name: pop music gently powered up.

With many of the first generations of power pop now passing one – Dwight Twilley and Eric Carmen among the most recent – it's pleasing to know there are those coming up like Young Guv (Ben Cook) who at 39 has, as far as we can tell, five albums behind him (Volumes I to IV repackaged as two double albums), a collection of his demos and more.

He's not above putting a Harrison-sounding slide into his songs, play up the harmony vocals and . . .

Just make thoroughly enjoyable power pop.

Usually we got quite far back to find songs From the Vaults but this piece of radio friendly power pop was so convincing we thought, why not?

You can hear Young Guv at bandcamp here.
