Ingrid and the Ministers: Boofhead (digital outlets)

Enthusiasm at recent shows for the briefly re-formed D4, reductively absurd Guitar Wolf and the Schizophonics confirmed raucous, guitar-injected punkish rock'n'roll still provides ear-scouring retro-pleasure for a broad demographic.

On this second album – collecting six previous singles – the capital's Ingrid and the Ministers marry T. Rex and Joan Jett to wheel-spinning ZZ Top and throbbing glam-blues (Broken Leaves, the menacing Porcelain God, the angry wah-wah rock of Jack's House).

Elsewhere they adopt the New Wave pop of the Motels (Albatross, the restrained Bowie), a thoughtful alt.folk ballad (Half-Life) and unburnished Go-Go's (Last Night I Dreamed That I Shot Myself).

The pub singalong Tits Out (“out at my funeral”) closes an entertaining sub-30 minutes and their sassy, sexual take on enjoyable, established forms.

The recording is of ridiculously low quality – just a reel-to-reel tape set up on table in a club with a single microphone pointed at the stage – and there has always been some debate... > Read more
