RECOMMENDED REISSUE: Ray Charles: Crying Time (digital outlets)

There are any number of great Ray Charles albums (notably the two volumes of Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music) and numerous compilations, but this seminal album from 1966 has just been remastered and reissued so we bring it to attention.

It included the slightly notorious (and hit) Let's Go Get Stoned but it is the Buck Owens title track with strings which is the real key.

Elsewhere there is the aching blues of No Use Crying and Going Down Slow, the big band swinging blues of Peace of Mind, the sentimental Tears (with lavish strings), the midnight blue Drifting Blues, the chugging You're In For A Big Surprise . . .

Recorded for his own label, it put him back in the centre of the frame after Modern Sounds (also remastered and available again) and whether he is filling the dancefloor or squeezing out the hurting soul (Don't You Think I Ought to Know), Ray Charles confirmed once more the word “genius” used so often about him wasn't a compliment.

It was a fact.
